So, you know how CBS is doing a US version of BBC's Sherlock? Yes, I too shuddered in horror when I first found out. But, but, this is so cool! They're gender & race bending Watson!!!!! Joan Watson will be played by Lucy Liu!!!!!!! They actually took a white, male character and make them into an Asian American female character. I'm simultaneously thrilled and astounded. *oh please, please let it be good - crosses fingers *

I have to admit to being skeptical. After all, one of the reasons the BBC Sherlock works so well is the incredible chemistry between Cumberbatch and Freeman. So a lot will depend on who they pick to play Sherlock.

Looks like it's going to be Johnny Lee Miller (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001538/) aka that dude from Eli Stone. I really, really hope it's good because Asian actors, especially women so rarely get leading roles. I wasn't even interested at all before, so I guess we'll see.

I think I'm going to consider it a weird AU fanfic of Sherlock that happens to be on my TV and hopefully it's written well.

Ack, something else just gleaned from Mr. Miller's IMDB - he did Frankenstein with Cumberbatch at the National Theater. They traded off playing the monster and the doctor depending or the day or week or something like that. I heard it was really good.

Oooh, interesting! I love that they're race- and gender-bending Watson! *fingers crossed* that it's good.

I'm also relieved they're leaving Sherlock British, I don't think I could have handled an actual American Sherlock. Displaced Brit is totally fine. I think Johnny Lee Miller looks like a good choice. I was all blech, whatever before this but now I really want it to be good.

I was annoyed as well until I heard they were changing Watson to a female and an Asian female at that. Loves it! I, too, hope it's good for that reason but at the same time it makes me wonder if that's how they're trying to deal with the possible homosexual vibes that Sherlock/Watson have together. IDK.

I really hope they don't just turn her into a love interest. I'd love, love to see a male/female friendship on tv that is just really close friendship, no sexual tention. I want her to be smart, a good foil for Sherlock, and a flirt (since John Watson's a ladies man in canon).

In the BBC one, you kind of find out that Watson's a ladies man when Sherlock starts naming all the women he's dated. Love it.

Castle showed how close Beckett was with Esposito a few episodes back which was nice but other than that, yeah. It's hard to find shows where they have a really close non-sexual friendship. Oo! Doctor Who! Donna and the Doctor and then Amy and the Doctor, although she crushed on him for a bit. The British seem to do a lot of things better entertainment-wise. More "normal-looking people," aka not a size 0 and not always drop dead gorgeous, but their personalities make them shmexy and lots of interracial coupling without having to explain why it's hard for their friends/family to see them together AND lots of gay couples. Love it.
